Building a Proud University: 1954-2013
The history of Coastal Carolina University is a story that begins with a remarkable group of community leaders who were determined to provide higher education opportunities for the people of Horry County. From its birth in 1954 as Coastal Carolina Junior College – with an enrollment of 53 students who met in the evening at Conway High School – Coastal Carolina University has found inspiration in the example of these early founders, who were known for their vision, energy and resolve. Although Coastal Carolina has seen transformational changes through the years, the words of our original founders still resonate today:
To coincide with the 50th anniversary of the University in 2004, history professor emeritus Roy Talbert Jr., authored Coastal Carolina University: The First 50 Years. The book describes the institution’s hardscrabble beginnings, the long and arduous road toward independence, and the realization and progress of an emerging Coastal Carolina University. The book is available in Kimbel Library.
