Health Insurance Requirements

All international students attending Coastal Carolina University, both F1 and J1 visa holders, must carry health insurance, including medical evacuation and repatriation coverage.  Medical insurance should be purchased before arriving to the United States, and must be purchased by the first day of the semester. Health insurance must always be kept valid and current. Proof of insurance, including the policy's coverage details and confirmation of purchase, must be submitted to the OIPS upon arriving to the U.S., as well as each and every time a new insurance policy is purchased or renewed.  The required insurance coverage depends on your visa type. Please consult the chart below for the minimum health insurance requirements for your visa.

Insurance Requirements

The minimum insurance requirements vary depending if you are a J1 or F1 status international student.  J1 students are in the United States for an exchange program and are generally here from one semester to a year.  F1 students have chosen Coastal Carolina University as their school of choice and are degree seeking.

  • $50,000 or greater major medical benefit (per accident or injury).  
  • $7,500 repatriation benefit.
  • $10,000 medical evacuation benefit (to his or her home country).
  • Medical deductible not to exceed $500 (per accident or illness).
  • $50,000 or greater major medical benefit (per accident or injury).  
  • $25,000 repatriation benefit.
  • $50,000 medical evacuation benefit (to his or her home country).
  • Medical deductible not to exceed $100 (per accident or illness).

Immunization Requirements

In addition to the insurance requirements listed above, all students attending a university or college in South Carolina are required to provide an immunization record.

Required Immunizations:

  • M.M.R. (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
    • (2 doses required at least 28 days apart for students born 1957 or later and all health sciences students).
    • dose given at age 12 months or later.
    • dose given at least 28 days after first dose.

Athletes

Beginning the fall semester of 2007, all international student-athletes must purchase insurance through the Coastal Carolina University athletic department to assure the proper coverage of possible sports related injuries.  It is important to purchase this insurance before arriving to the United States.  For more information please contact the Athletic Department at 843-349-2820 or go to http://www.goccusports.com/index.html?section=9&page=6 .
