PDA Special Topics

1. PDA Title: Utilizing the Business Card

Description: In this PDA you will use your networking skills to get the most use out of your business card. Independently attend a civic or professional organization meeting (Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, Rotary, industry meeting, such as, a Strategic Human Resources Management, Board of Realtors, Marketing meeting, American Culinary Federation, etc.) and exchange business cards from at least three organizations. The organizations can be profit or nonprofit organizations. Choose one of the organizations to do a follow up meeting. This follow-up activity can take various forms, but the purpose is to connect with the person or organization outside of the initial meeting place. An interview with someone at the organization (not necessarily the initial contact), a tour of the facilities, even other correspondence can meet this requirement. 

Note: Before starting the PDA make sure to print the “Utilizing the Business Card PDA Credit Approval” form from the Professional Development Activities website. To earn PDA credit you must submit this completed form along with copies of three business cards to:

2. PDA Title: Each 1 Teach 1

Description: The Each 1 Teach 1 is a program dedicated to assisting at-risk youth succeed and is administered through a unique partnership between the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration and the Spadoni College of Education's Biddle Center for Teaching, Learning and Community Engagement. The Brown Scholars are a select group of Coastal Carolina University students who educate and mentor the students in the Each 1 Teach 1 Entrepreneurship Institute. The scholars are trained by the director of the Each 1 Teach 1, the director of the Biddle Center for Teaching, Learning and Community Engagement, and local entrepreneurs. The scholars deliver workshops on life skills and entrepreneurial skills during the summer programs and mentor the students in the program throughout the school year. Scholars are community leaders, enthusiastic educators and caring role models. 3. PDA Title: Elect Her- Campus Women Win

Description:Coastal Carolina University is one of only 30 colleges and universities in the nation selected to be a 2013 site for Elect Her – Campus Women Win, a free training program to encourage and train young women to run for student government and other leadership positions on their campuses and, ultimately, for elected and leadership positions following graduation. The four-year-old program is collaboration between the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the nonprofit organization Running Start.

Did you know? South Carolina ranks last in the nation for the percentage (8.8 percent) of women elected to serve in the S.C. Legislature (Colorado leads the nation with 41 percent). In the current S.C. Legislature, there are no women senators and only 16 women serving in the House of Representatives.

4. PDA Title: Careers With A Cause

Description: Coastal Carolina University presents Careers with a Cause, an all-day event that encourages students to explore careers and organizations dedicated to addressing important causes and issues. The event is sponsored by CCU Career Services Center, Student Activities and Leadership and the TOMS Campus Club.

TOMS One Day Without Shoes      

11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Prince Lawn

Description: Students, faculty and alumni are invited to join the TOMS One Day Without Shoes here on campus.  Last year people went without shoes at over 1,000 events in over 25 countries around the globe to raise awareness of the TOMS One for One Movement.  TOMS Shoes is a for profit company that has a unique cause - for every pair of shoes sold, another pair is given away to someone in need. Career Services will be showcasing companies with a cause like TOMS so students can see there are careers out there that make a positive difference through a specific mission.   Information will be made available about various careers, agencies and organizations that make a difference in the lives of others through a non-profit structure, charitable giving, a missions model or purpose driven cause. 

Start Something that Matters

Description: For Tomorrow, The TOMS Shoes Story documents Blake Mycoskie and his family, friends and TOMS staff on an emotional journey to the remote villages of Argentina where they hand placed 10,000 matched pairs of shoes on the feet of children in need. This TOMS documentary will be followed by a special talk by Dr. Mark Mitchell about being “Someone that Matters”. A panel of community leaders who have “started something that matters” within their own fields will share their stories and inspirations to close out this special event.

5. Wall College Connections

Description: Wall College Connections is a signature event sponsored annually by the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration at Coastal Carolina University. Not Just for Profit: Sustainability, Social Responsibility and Social Entrepreneurship was the theme of the 2012 Wall Connections event, which featured dynamic and interactive sessions, local, national and international speakers, and networking opportunities for students in the Wall College of Business and the greater university community.

6. Wall Interdisciplinary Talks (WITs)

Description: These presentations provide a channel for Wall College of Business faculty to show students what type of research they do outside of class. Each of the talks will take place on a Friday afternoon between 3:00 and 3:50 p.m. Each talk will include a short presentation followed by questions and discussion.
