Graduate
Council Description, Purpose and Membership
Membership: Eight faculty members
(two from each college) and the Associate Provost for Academics and Director
of Graduate Studies. Ex Officio: Registrar. Voting membership on the Graduate
Council is comprised of tenure-track faculty members.
Term of service: three years
Purpose: The council considers any
academic matter related to graduate education at the University. Specific
areas of consideration for the council include new graduate courses and
new degree program proposals, substantive changes in degree programs such
as changes in existing courses required, the addition of new courses, etc.,
new courses in support of graduate programs where the desire is for the
course to be a permanent part of the university catalog, and substantive
changes in existing courses such as pre-requisites and significant course
title or description changes. The council also considers existing policies,
procedures, and programs related to graduate study to include such areas
as admission standards, advising guidelines, degree completion requirements,
assistantships criteria and procedures for faculty members to teach at the
graduate level, and criteria and procedures for program evaluation. Actions
taken by the council related to these matters are forwarded to the Faculty
Senate for information.
