History Major
In their freshman and sophomore years, all students at Coastal Carolina University take the same core curriculum, described in the University Catalog. History majors are required to take seven Foundation courses, many of which also fulfill Core Curriculum requirements. One of the Foundation courses, History 250, "Historical Research and Writing," should be completed by the end of the sophomore year. History majors may not enroll in any upper-level History course unless they have completed or are taking HIST 250.
Majors then complete an additional seven upper-level courses, one of which must be from each of the three main content areas (American, European, and Non-Western history). Only one advanced course is absolutely required: HIST 498, "Senior Seminar," a study of historiograpny and methodology. Students with a 3.5 GPA in history courses may elect to write a Senior Thesis, an option we recommend for students who wish to attend graduate school.
Students majoring in history must earn a grade of C or above in all history courses.
