Farmers market promotes sustainability
CCU hosted its first Farmers Market event in the spring, a new effort aimed at promoting sustainability, nutrition and a sense of community. The event, held in Spadoni Park, was a hit, attracting people from on and off campus who purchased a variety of produce from local farmers.
Sponsored by the campus Sustainability Initiative in cooperation with the Waccamaw Market Cooperative, the Farmers Market also included a sunflower seed planting demonstration by CCU students and a cooking demonstration by Aramark, the food company that serves CCU.
“Our first event was a real success,” said Jennifer Sellers, CCU’s sustainability coordinator. “One of the participating farmers sold out of produce three times and had to send back to the farm for more.”
The popularity of the initial event has encouraged the organizers to plan a Farmers Market day twice a year, in the spring and the fall.
