The documentary I Am follows director Tom Shadyac (of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Nutty Professor fame) and his crew around the world as they interview doctors, philosophers, religious leaders and others asking two questions: What is wrong with the world, and what can we do to fix it? The film encourages individuals to discover that we are more connected than we may believe and brings a message of hope for the future. Eleanor Finnegan of CCU’s Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies faculty will speak on Rumi, the 13th-century Muslim poet and Sufi mystic, and his universal messages of love. The Australian film Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002-Rated PG) is set during a period known as the stolen generation, when half-caste children were removed from their Aboriginal homes and forced into indentured servitude to “save them from themselves.” Two sisters and a cousin flee the gulag and travel thousands of miles through unforgiving outback in an effort to get home. This program is sponsored by the Office of International Programs and the Jackson Family Center for Ethics & Values, which will host a discussion on ethical questions following the film.

Join us for the annual Coastal Band Program fundraising concert. This joint effort between the CCU Bands and the Office for Philanthropy provides an opportunity for patrons to see the direct effects of their generosity. The spectrum concert features student music groups from the CCU Band program. You’ll hear an hour of uninterrupted music with everything from guitars to drums, and styles from classical to jazz to show tunes. The grand finale features the CCU Symphonic Band performing exciting music including the famous “Colonel Bogey March” made famous in the epic World War II movie, The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Coastal Carolina University’s Cultural Celebration is an event designed to involve all areas of campus in celebrating different cultures. The festival highlights the history, music, dance, art and food of many countries and cultures. In addition to ethnic entertainment, there will be arts and jewelry on display, as well as offerings of cuisine from various countries. Tables will be set up for CCU student organizations and clubs to showcase different cultures.

In turn-of-the-century Manhattan, a melting pot of cultures, colors and dreams simmers. As strains of ragtime fill the air, Esther, an African-American seamstress, sews corsets and other intimate apparel for clients – from ladies of the evening to high-society women. Suddenly, for Esther, these items of clothing represent the hope of love, but will she find it in a forbidden relationship with the Orthodox Jewish merchant or with the romantic stranger from Barbados? Winner of the 2004 New York Drama Critics Circle and the Outer Critics Circle Awards, Intimate Apparel is a lush tale of romance, humor and heartbreak.  

Join music faculty members Patti Edwards (soprano), Jeffrey Jones (baritone) and Amy Hardison Tully (flute) for a night of vocal music interspersed with flute in obbligato and duet accompanied by Daniel Hull (guitar) and Daniel Francis (piano). The program includes works by J.S. Bach, Gabriel Fauré, Albert Roussel, John Rutter, John Corigliano and Ronald Roxbury.       

This Tea & Ethics panel discussion will explore the ethical issues that concern students as they deal with the increasingly problematic world of idea ownership. The panel will explore what it means to own intangible objects like ideas, how the changing digital landscape presents students with new and complex problems, and what can be done to educate students with respect to these difficulties as they attempt to succeed academically. After a three-year hiatus from performing his original songs, singer-songwriter David Bankston returns with his acoustic guitar to perform selections from his CDs, the award-winning Galvez Town and Jazz Blues Gospel Shoes. He will also premiere new songs. The concert will feature guest performances by some of his musical friends. Past guests have included Steve Bailey, Sam Broussard of Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, and American Idol star Elise Testone.
