HCHEC awards scholarships to local students

The Horry County Higher Education Commission (HCHEC) recently announced 26 area recipients of its annual scholarships.

The area high school graduates, who currently attend Coastal Carolina University, received five scholarships for Leadership, three for Visual and Performing Arts, eight for Peace & Conflict Studies and 10 for Academic Excellence.

The Leadership, Visual and Performing Arts, and Peace & Conflict Studies scholarships provide $2,500 per academic year for up to four years at CCU to qualified Horry County students who show exemplary academic work, leadership and community service; demonstrate artistic talent or demonstrate critical thought processes in the areas of peace, conflict, justice, human rights and human responsibility. The Academic Excellence scholarship provides $2,000 per academic year for up to four years at CCU.

Carson Berry, a marine science major from Myrtle Beach High School

Alexander Hoyt, an elementary education major from Early College High School

Ian Lackey, an applied physics major from St. James High School

Bridget Suggs, a biology major from Loris High School

HCHEC Visual and Performing Arts scholarships were awarded to:

Brooks Leibee, a graphic design major from North Myrtle Beach High School

Christina Melchiorre, an art studio major from St. James High School

Jose Rangel, a music major from Aynor High School

HCHEC Peace & Conflict Studies scholarships were awarded to:

Hunter Bell, a chemistry major from Loris High School

Sarah Causey, a political science major from Carolina Forest High School

Wyatt Culler, an accounting major from Aynor High School

Madison Knight, a biology major from North Myrtle Beach High School

Abdulfattokh Masaidov, a management major from Myrtle Beach High School

Sarah Navin, an English major from Carolina Forest High School

Virginia Novak, a psychology major from St. James High School

Aaron Parks, a biology major from Carolina Forest High School

HCHEC Academic Excellence scholarships were awarded to:

Raven Birch, an exercise science major from Socastee High School

Alyssa Bowey-Macey, an exercise science major from St. James High School

Cameron Collins, a biology major from Loris High School

Veronica Good, an English major from Myrtle Beach High School

David Jones, a political science major from Conway High School

Madison Knight, a biology major from North Myrtle Beach High School

Slade Nobles, a chemistry major from Green Sea Floyds High School

Lisa Pieterse, a biology major from Carolina Forest High School

Jose Rangel, a music major from Aynor High School

Carlie Todd, an intelligence and national securities major from Early College High School

The Horry County Higher Education Commission Leadership Scholarships are designed to promote service and citizenship and to recognize students for their leadership, volunteerism and academic excellence. To qualify as scholarship applicants, students must be an Horry County resident and a senior attending an accredited Horry County high school, submit an application, have earned a minimum 2.5 high school grade point average through their junior year and have an established record of exemplary community service.

The Horry County Higher Education Commission Visual and Performing Arts Scholarships are designed to assist exceptionally talented Horry County seniors who plan to major in music, musical theatre, theatre arts, art studio, dramatic arts or graphic design. In addition to being an Horry County resident and a senior attending an accredited Horry County high school, students must also submit an application, have a minimum 2.5 high school grade point average and audition or submit a portfolio for review.

The Horry County Higher Education Commission Peace & Conflict Studies Scholarships are designed to encourage critical thought among Horry County high school seniors about peace, conflict, justice, human rights and human responsibility in the contemporary world. To qualify, students must be an Horry County resident and a senior attending an accredited Horry County high school, submit an application, have earned a minimum 2.5 high school GPA through their junior year and write an essay of at least 1,500 words answering the question: How can social media be best used in building or maintaining peace or in managing conflict?

The Horry County Higher Education Commission Academic Excellence scholarship honors the top graduate of each eligible Horry County high school for his/her outstanding academic accomplishments. The top-ranked graduate from each eligible Horry County high school admitted to Coastal Carolina University by Jan. 1 will be awarded this scholarship.
