New mini-bin system rolls out across campus
The new mini-bin system that was implemented throughout the month of August across campus includes a personal recycling bin and a smaller attached trash receptacle, replacing office trash cans. The system included an introductory guide that outlines instructions on how to sort your own office waste and explains the benefits of the program. Implementation and delivery was completed by Aug. 14.
Our participation in this program is meant to help us become more aware of the waste we create by managing that waste ourselves. We will change the culture of waste production, collection and management on campus.
Since Custodial Services will not be responsible for emptying or maintaining your mini-bin systems, they will have more time to focus attention on high-use areas like bathrooms, classrooms, conference rooms, and hallways. They will also be responsible for managing recycling and trash at the multiple centralized locations you will use to sort and dispose of your waste.
Neither Custodial Services nor Sustain Coastal teams are getting smaller as a result of this program. Their time has been appropriately redirected to tasks that maximize sanitation and educate our community regarding waste reduction, respectively.
If you have questions about this new program, you are encouraged to contact Jeremy Monday, interim director of Custodial Services and Sustain Coastal, via jmonday1@coastal.edu or 843-349-2389.
