Community Garden Rules and Etiquette
By using a garden bed, you agree to follow the Garden Rules and Etiquette below:
- Respect your garden neighbors! Keep your garden bed healthy, and do not put anything in someone else’s garden bed.
- Basic garden tools are available for use in the shared garden tool bin. After using a tool, be sure to return it to the bin.
- Water is available on-site. After you are done using the water, be sure to turn off the spigot.
- Place weeds and other garden waste in the garden waste bin.
- Planting:
- Gardeners must supply their own seeds and/or plants.
- Gardeners agree to only plant annual crops of vegetables, fruits, herbs, or flowers (to attract pollinators).
- See the seasonal plant recommendations below for examples of plants that do well in our region.
- The following are NOT allowed: perennial flowers, perennial fruits (i.e., raspberries), woody vegetation, shrubs, or trees.
- Fertilizing: Only organic fertilizer may be used. If you have questions, contact commgarden@coastal.edu.
- Weeding: Keep your bed free of weeds by regular manual weeding. Use of herbicides is NOT allowed.
- Pest control: If you observe pests in your bed, DO NOT apply any pesticides. Contact commgarden@coastal.edu.
- Gardeners will notify commgarden@coastal.edu in advance if they must abandon their plot.
- Beds are to be maintained for the entire season. A bed that is not maintained (e.g., not weeded, not harvested, etc.) may be forfeited.
- Gardeners will be expected to clear their bed of produce, plants, and any other material by August 31 for the summer season, and by February 28 for the winter season.
- Respect the future! Remember that someone else will inherit your garden bed after you!
Failure to follow the guidelines above may result in forfeiture of your bed and/or disqualify you from future garden use.
If you have excess produce, consider donating it to the CINO Pantry! You may contact them at 843-349-4161 to schedule a drop-off time for your produce donation.
