Health and Well-Being

The Center for Health and Well-being provides high quality primary care, mental and emotional health services, and prevention education to support student success. Located at 251 University Boulevard, the Center for Health and Well-being includes Student Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, and LiveWell.

 

Student Health Services

Health Services: All Coastal Carolina University students are eligible for unlimited office visits. There is a nominal fee for some laboratory testing, medications and office procedures. Student Health Services does not bill insurance companies or other responsible parties; however, proper documentation will be provided to enable students to pursue reimbursement from insurance companies. Student Health Services will, however, file claims for students covered under the school-sponsored program from Academic Health Plans.

TimelyCare is a 24/7, free virtual care service for students to address common concerns that can be safely diagnosed and treated remotely. All you need is an internet connection. We offer scheduled and on-demand medical visits. Our licensed providers are trained to treat a wide range of medical conditions. 

TalkNow Chat is Available! TalkNow Chat is on-demand access to a mental health professional 24/7. Our goal is to get you connected to a mental health provider within three to seven minutes. You can discuss any concern from feeling down to being anxious due to academic, social, or athletic demands, or simply because you miss home and it's hard to cope with all the new demands of campus life. When you start a visit, just click "TalkNow," and you'll be connected with a professional to get the help and advice you need.

Students can access TalkNow Chat the same way as a TalkNow video or phone visit:

  • Select “What would you like to be seen for?”

Health Coaching is a scheduled appointment service to help students start and/or maintain optimal sleep, nutrition, exercise, weight and stress management strategies for a holistic wellbeing approach. No-cost, virtual visits can be scheduled with a certified health coach.

Comprehensive Student Health Insurance- Voluntary Enrollment Plan

All United States citizens and all international students are required to have health insurance. For those students who are not covered under a family policy here are some options:

Coastal Carolina University sponsors a comprehensive medical plan through Blue Cross and Blue Shield managed by Academic Health Plans, Inc. for a reasonable cost for students who do not have comprehensive health insurance coverage. Students may obtain a health insurance brochure at Student Health Services or from the Academic Health Plans website at coastal.myahpcare.com or by calling toll free 1-855-306-9474.

  • This plan has medical, dental, vision, mental health, pharmacy, and preventative health care coverage; it meets all Affordable Care Act Requirements.

The Affordable Care Act provides comprehensive medical coverage for all uninsured citizens and all international students. Students who do not have comprehensive health insurance coverage may access the Health Insurance Marketplace by going to www.healthcare.gov or by calling toll free 1-800-318-2596 to determine eligibility, plans, and costs.

Student Accident Insurance Plan

At no cost to students, the Student Accident Insurance Plan, through A-G Student Insurance, offers a $10,000 maximum yearly benefit for all full-time Coastal students.  A full-time student is defined as any enrolled undergraduate student taking at least 12 credit hours or a graduate student taking at least 9 credit hours. Also this plan provides coverage for participation in intercollegiate NCAA activities.  For more information about the plan’s benefits, how to enroll, and how to electronically file claims for qualifying medical expenses, please visit AIG’s website at https://agadministrators.com/coastal or call toll free: 1-800-634-8628.

 



Counseling & Psychological Services

Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) offers individual, couples and group counseling; psychiatric services; crisis intervention; assessment; drug and alcohol education; workshops; referrals; and consultations. There are situations which a student's needs will be best met by mental health services in the community.  These include (but are not limited to):

  1. Students who would benefit from long-term therapy
  2. Students seeking regular, weekly counseling appointments
  3. Students seeking psychiatric care and medication management 
  4. Students who require the care of a specialist (eating disorders, complex trauma, substance abuse, and psychosis)
  5. Students seeking an evaluation

occur when students with common issues choose to get together and support one another in coping with those issues.  Usually, a counselor will meet with the support group once or twice to get them started and then the students continue to meet on their own as they choose.  Counseling Services staff will arrange space on campus for support groups to meet.  Students do not need to be clients of Counseling Services to participate.

LiveWell

Livewell is a resource for the campus community to promote societal, community, relationship, and individual wellness. We provide campuswide wellness initiatives, educational events and presentations, internship opportunities, and services that promote well-being.

Coastal Carolina students now have free and immediate access to medical and mental health support through TimelyMD, the leading telehealth company specializing in higher education.

LiveWell Initiatives:

Alcohol and Other Drugs: The goal of the program is to help students determine their strategy for a safe, healthy and low risk lifestyle in regard to alcohol and substance use choices in order to achieve academic success and personal satisfaction


Peer Educators: LiveWell offers opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students to participate in service learning through volunteerism with our programs: SHORE Peer Educators, LiveWell Peer Educators, and a LiveWell Office Internship


Interpersonal Violence Prevention: LiveWell Interpersonal Violence Prevention Services provides individual confidential advocacy to CCU community members impacted by any form of sexual misconduct, regardless of when or where it has occurred.

Brief Alcohol Intervention and Screening for College Students (BASICS)

LiveWell offers BASICS/CASICS (Brief Alcohol (Cannabis) Screening and Intervention for College Students) to students to examine and explore their alcohol and other substance use in a safe and non judgmental setting with a trained counselor. In BASICS you will complete an online questionnaire, which creates a personalized profile report used to determine a personal strategy in regard to alcohol and substance abuse. 

The goal of the program is to help students determine their strategy for a safe, healthy and low risk lifestyle in regard to alcohol and substance use choices in order to achieve academic success and personal satisfaction.

Students may self refer to participate in BASICS/CASICS by contacting the LiveWell Office at livewell@coastal.edu.

Interpersonal Violence Confidential Advocate

LiveWell provides individual confidential advocacy to CCU community members impacted by any form of sexual misconduct, regardless of when or where it has occurred.

Our confidential advocate will empower students to make their own choices and is not required to disclose anyone’s identity. The Advocate is here to support students however they decide to proceed as they begin to recover and heal from what happened.

Here are some of the ways the Confidential Advocate may assist students:

  • Academic assistance
  • Housing relocation assistance
  • Accompaniment to medical care
  • Accompaniment to Title IX, Student Conduct, and/or Public Safety meetings and other appointments related to what happened

CCU students, faculty, and staff may call the confidential advocate during university business hours 8:30-5:00 M-F 843-333-2266(mobile) or 843-349-2304 (office).
