The triumphant day for Liam Breen has arrived. After four years of growth and memories at Coastal Carolina, he will move his mortarboard tassel from the right to the left. The commencement ceremony will be an exclamation mark on a TEAL-tastic experience that has the communication student from New Jersey reflecting on the place he called home the past several years.

“The school has changed so much since I have been here. We have put up so many new buildings, we have won a national championship, businesses are sprouting up everywhere,” Liam explains. “It has just been an amazing ride and it has been really enjoyable.”

The amazing ride has taken Liam far from the CCU campus. He studied abroad twice, once in Italy and once in the Czech Republic. Very complimentary about the abroad registration process and the actual experiences themselves, Liam is appreciative that Coastal allowed him to pursue his traveling interests. Don’t think that he plans to discontinue his visits to distant lands now that he is graduating.

“I really want to explore and traveling has always been a passion of mine,” Liam replies when asked about his future plans.

Specifically, he would like to explore Asia. Longing to venture out of his comfort zone, Liam wants to save up money for a backpacking expedition through the southeast portion of the continent. He hopes employment with a media ad agency will help him start stockpiling funds for the trip. Liam is fascinated and excited about the new technology available to advertise.

“What I think is really great about it is that people can make videos and monetize it all on their own,” Liam says about digital media advertising. “It’s quick, it’s fast and it reaches the target audience in real time.”

When Liam first heard about his soon-to-be alma mater, CCU definitely hit its target audience. There is nothing quite like a student who loves his University and embraces the Feel the Teal mantra. We hope Liam enjoys his special day and wish him the best.

Liam studied abroad in Italy during his time as a CCU student.

Q&A with Liam

How did you hear about Coastal?: I first heard about Coastal through my adviser junior year of high school. I told her I wanted to be in the south so she recommended CCU. The rest is history.

Why did you come to Coastal?: I came to Coastal because of its location and it was starting to make a name for itself. I had seen all the renovations made on campus and could tell the University was starting to become a nationally recognized school so it was something I wanted to be a part of.

Favorite professor: My favorite professor at Coastal was my sophomore year history professor Matt McDonough, Ph.D. He’s someone who’s very passionate about educating others and just really made sure you learned the material. His class was very insightful.

Favorite class: I would say my intercultural communications class taught in Arezzo, Italy. We stayed at this 500-year-old villa in the hills of Tuscany and every class was taught on the roof overlooking the village. We learned about how different cultures interact and perceive different topics and also how we can become more culturally competent.

Favorite aspect of Coastal?: My favorite aspect about Coastal is probably how friendly and outgoing everyone is. Whether it Is class or going out on the weekends everyone is just really genuine and nice.

Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?: My favorite aspect about the Conway/Myrtle Beach area is of course the beach and the array of golf courses. We have beautiful weather almost year-round so every weekend I have the extremely difficult decision of either playing 18 holes, heading to the beach or going to the pool. It’s a tough life.

Plans after graduation?:  After I graduate, I plan on working and saving up money to go on a backpacking expedition through southeast Asia. I studied abroad in Arezzo and Prague, so I have been fortunate enough to have seen a lot of Europe. This is a place that’s out of my comfort zone and the culture and landscape is really fascinating to me.  After all that, however, I plan on working at a media ad agency or a media content provider in New York City. Another option is to work for an ad tech provider on either the buy or sell side.

What are your hobbies?: My hobbies include playing tennis, hanging out with my friends, traveling and taking my dogs, Pumpkin and Topher, on long walks back home.

Do you have any hidden talents?: I don’t really have any hidden talents however I won the Junior National Platform Tennis tournament and compete in paddle tournaments competitively when I am back home.

Bonus Info: There’s nothing else I would like to say about myself but I would like to thank the Coastal Carolina community for being my home away from home these past four years. It is crazy to think how fast it went by and all the amazing people I have met. I am looking forward to the next chapter in my life and will cherish these days forever. Go Chants.

Liam is a communication major.
