New commencement rain plan announced

The rain plan for Coastal Carolina University commencement on Saturday, May 6 has changed.

In case of severe weather, the commencement ceremony will held at 10 a.m. at the Palace Theatre at Broadway at the Beach at the corner of U.S. 17 Bypass and 21st Avenue North. If the rain plan is implemented, admission will be by ticket only.

The previous rain location was Kimbel Gymnasium. Students have until Tuesday, May 2 to pick up three tickets each from the Wheelwright Box Office. After Tuesday, they will be limited to two tickets.

Candidates should report to the Palace lobby by 9 a.m. and faculty by 9:15 a.m. Commencement is scheduled to be held at Brooks Stadium at 8:30 a.m. Saturday if the weather is favorable or in case of slight rain. Coastal will recognize 739 May and August candidates.

U.S. Chief Judge of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals William W. Wilkins will deliver the commencement address and receive the honorary degree Doctor of Public Service. David Harwell, a retired chief justice of the Supreme Court of South Carolina, will also receive the honorary degree Doctor of Public Service, as will Gerrita Postlewait, superintendent for Horry County Schools. Myrtle Beach photographer Jack Thompson will receive the honorary Doctor of Fine Arts.
