HCHEC announces CCU Senior Year Academic Award
Applicants must meet the following eligibility for the scholarship:
-- Be a graduate of an Horry County high school,
-- Have earned at least a 3.00 cumulative CCU GPA,
-- Have completed at least 90 credit hours of coursework toward an undergraduate degree,
-- Demonstrate moderate financial need as determined by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), and
-- Complete an application and include an academic plan for graduation.
The award is for one academic year and the amount varies based on available funds and applications received. The amount varies from a minimum award of $1,000 to a maximum award of $2,500 to be divided equally between the fall and spring semester.
For consideration of this award, students must complete and submit an application to CCU's Financial Aid Office before June 15, 2007. The new scholarship will be implemented in the Fall 2007 semester.
"[The commission] viewed this scholarship an incentive and more importantly as a vote of confidence in the scholarship candidate that she or he can complete their degree requirements. We thought that this scholarship was a cost-effective way to improve student retention and to increase the graduation rate among our seniors," said Peggy Vogel, member of the commission.
The HCHEC was formed in 1959 by the South Carolina General Assembly to develop higher education opportunities for students of Horry County. Commission members are recommended by the Horry County Legislative Delegation and appointed by the Governor of South Carolina. The organization has played a significant role in the development of the university through various other scholarships it awards to Coastal students.
