CCU'S AFRICAN-AMERICAN CELEBRATION EVENTS ANNOUNCED
The following events are scheduled:
• Lois Dawson, called “the most promising vocalist to emerge in recent years” by Independent Weekly, will perform Saturday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Wall Auditorium. Recipient of the 1998 Indies Arts Award, Dawson has headlined the Duke Jazz Series, the Page Walker Jazz Series and Jazz at Brevard. She has appeared in concerts with such jazz luminaries as Jerry Butler, Roy Ayers and Arturo Sandoval. Tickets are $10; $5 for students under age 18.
• The annual Greater Gospel Sing Out, which features the harmony of Coastal’s Gospel Choir with special guest choirs from around the region, will be held Sunday, Feb. 11 at 4:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium.
• The Sankofa African-American Museum on Wheels, a traveling exhibit highlighting African-American achievements and inventions, will be displayed Tuesday, Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Wall Auditorium.
• Coastal students, faculty and staff as well as community members will read their own poems or those written by their favorite African- American poets on Wednesday, March 28 at 12:30 p.m. in Wall Auditorium. • Cultural Celebration, a day-long festival celebrating cultural diversity through music, art, performance and food, will be held Wednesday, April 11 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Spadoni Park. There will be a charge for refreshments and other items for sale.
