1. Linda P. Kuykendall Endowed Scholarship

Headshot of Linda KuykendallIn 2018, the Linda P. Kuykendall Scholarship was named for esteemed Edwards College faculty member Linda Kuykendall. Kuykendall co-created the Communication undergraduate program with Dr. Lee Bollinger from the Department of English at Coastal Carolina University. With the success of that program, they and Dr. Deborah Breede later created the Department of Communication. Before and since, Kuykendall has been an irreplaceable source of support for her students, colleagues, and community. That is why we are proud to have the annual Linda Kuykendall Communication Endowed Scholarship available to any undergraduate student majoring in Communication who meets the following criteria. Kuykendall is a passionate advocate for her students, past, present, and future, so the Department of Communication, Media, & Culture is proud to encourage you to apply!

The deadline for the 2025-2026 scholarship is April 30, 2025.

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

  1. Major in Communication & Media, Journalism & Sports Media, or Public Relations & Strategic Communication
  2. Have a minimum 3.0 GPA (high school GPA for incoming students, college GPA for continuing students)
  3. Maintain full-time status and demonstrate satisfactory degree progress
  4. Complete and submit to CommScholar@coastal.edu and LindaK@coastal.edu
    1. a 2 minute video describing how this scholarship will benefit you and help you to meet your collegiate goals
    2. the Linda P. Kuykendall Endowed Scholarship Application
  5. Complete an interview if requested

2. Kourtney Breannah Ballen-Wade Annual Scholarship

She not only pursued her studies diligently but also made her family incredibly proud by earning her bachelor's degree in communications. Her commitment to her education and her determination to succeed are values that we seek to honor and perpetuate through the Kourtney Breannah Ballen-Wade Annual Scholarship. While Kourtney was passionate about many things, her love for fine arts was particularly special. This scholarship reflects her passion for the arts by supporting students majoring in Communication, English or Art Studio/Visual Arts that can be deeply transformative and expressive. This scholarship not only honors Kourtney's memory but also serves as a testament to her values and aspirations. It recognizes that education is not just about academic achievement but also about her character, leadership, and the ability to overcome challenges with grace and resilience, as Kourtney herself exemplified. 3. Peggy Mishoe Annual Writers Scholarship

Headshot of Peggy MishoeIn 2020, the Edwards College created the Peggy Mishoe Annual Writers Scholarship. Peggy Mishoe was a longtime freelance writer and columnist for The Sun News before passing away in August of 2018. Mishoe’s writing demonstrated the essential, positive impact that journalism has, especially in the Horry County, Conway, and Myrtle Beach communities. Through her column, Mishoe revealed the meaningful differences that neighbors, unsung heroes, and local history can make in the world. The Peggy Mishoe Annual Writers Scholarship is available to students majoring in Journalism & Sports Media or in Communication with an Interactive Journalism concentration who meet the following criteria. The Department of Communication, Media, & Culture is proud to celebrate Peggy Mishoe by encouraging students to apply and help continue her contributions to journalism and community culture.

The deadline for the 2025-2026 scholarship is April 30, 2025.

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

  1. Major in Journalism & Sports Media
  2. Have a minimum 3.0 GPA (high school GPA for incoming students, college GPA for continuing students)

    • A paragraph describing career goals/aspirations
    • A writing sample of 500 words or fewer about a community-based activity, event, person, or local human interest story in the form of a news or editorial column
  5. Preference is given to:
    • Students in financial need, shown through Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
    • Students who graduated from a high school in South Carolina or North Carolina
