Special Interest Housing

Special Interest Housing

Coastal Carolina University Housing offers several opportunities for students to become invested and engaged in their communities. One option in pursuing further involvement is applying for Special Interest Housing. Involvement in Special Interest Housing has proven to be an effective way for students to become invested in their community, and involvement with a community has been shown to lead to better classroom performance and satisfaction with their experience at Coastal Carolina University. For more information on this opportunity, click on one of the interest areas below. If you have any questions, contact us at sih@coastal.edu.

International students and American students will be paired as roommates to live in the Intercultural Experience Community (IEC). This community is designed to cultivate friendships, increase intercultural understanding, and encourage mutual sharing of knowledge and experiences. Students are assigned to a designated section of Low Country.

While programming will develop around the interests of the members of this community, potential programs may include:

  • Stammtisch-style discussions (informal gatherings) on current topics of international interest with fellow students and distinguished faculty and staff;
  • Opportunities to learn about study abroad, international internships, and international service learning from student Global Ambassadors returning from international experiences;
  • Identifying and developing exciting on-campus and off-campus activities to enhance cross cultural awareness, including International Education Week;
  • Participation in intercultural programming at local schools and community libraries; and
  • Community dinners and social gatherings.

What will you gain from living in the Intercultural Experience Community?

  • Potential for developing lifelong friendships with students from around the world
  • An enhanced ability to understand and adapt to cultural diversity and intercultural issues
  • Activities to experience and learn about cultural traditions and to broaden your worldview
  • Opportunities to cultivate your leadership skills
QUESTIONS FOR HOUSING APPLICATION:

Students who are part of the LIFE Program live with other LIFE students in Ingle Hall or Low Country. Students do not need to apply to live in the community as you are automatically accepted to the community as part of your acceptance to CCU, as long as you complete your housing application by the published Special Interest Housing room selection deadline. Typically this deadline is in mid-April. The LIFE Program will assign students to suites/apartments with a live-in residential support.
