Fall 2023 Housing FAQs

Fall 2023 Housing Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

The University has charged University Housing with implementing the following strategies to prioritize housing assignments for student required to live in university owned and operated housing:

  • Increase the number of beds available to students required to live with CCU;
  • Cancel the incomplete housing applications of those students not required to live in University Housing; and
  • Incentivize required and non-required students to cancel their applications and/or assignments for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Canceled Applications

If you received an email from University Housing informing you that your application was canceled it means that your housing application was canceled, and you will not be assigned a space in University Housing. You should seek alternative off-campus housing. You can learn more about, and find contact information for, some of the available off-campus alternatives via offcampusliving.coastal.edu.

If you received an email on Tuesday, May 30, informing you that your housing application was canceled it is because:

  • You are a student who is not required to live in University Housing and has an incomplete housing application.

If you received an email on another date informing you that your housing application was cancelled, one of the following reasons is true:

  • You have been academically suspended and are not eligible to live in university housing.
  • You are not registered for Fall 2023 classes, which may mean you have one of several holds on your student account.
  • You did not attend your scheduled orientation session.
  • You canceled your housing application in MyCoastalHome.

If your housing application has been canceled, you should find alternative off-campus housing or place yourself on the waitlist by Friday, June 2. Keep in mind that even after placing yourself on the waitlist, it is very unlikely that space will become available for you. You should make every effort to find alternative off-campus housing for the coming academic year. You can learn more about, and find contact information for, some of the available off-campus alternatives via offcampusliving.coastal.edu.

Yes, unless you place yourself on the waitlist, your $200 prepayment fees will be credited to your student account as soon as possible.

There are several available alternatives that can be explored via offcampusliving.coastal.edu. We encourage you to visit this website to learn more about, and find contact information for, some of the available off-campus alternatives.

Waitlist

All students whose housing applications have been canceled and received an email on Tuesday, May 30 can place themselves on the waitlist. Students must have a completed housing application and submit the waitlist request form, a link to which can be found in the cancellation email, by Friday, June 2. The waitlist will remain active through Friday, September 8.

If you have not received a housing assignment by Friday, September 8, your waitlist request will be canceled, and $200 prepayment fees will be credited to your student account.

Yes, move-in day for new students is Friday, August 18, and Fall 2023 classes start on Wednesday, August 23, but we will continue to monitor the waitlist until Friday, September 8. The reason for the extended waitlist timeline is that a very small number of students with active assignments who attended orientation and have a class schedule will decide at the last minute not to move in and not to attend CCU. Another very small group of students might move in and decide to withdraw from the institution soon thereafter. We will use the first two weeks of classes—until Friday, September 8—to make those kinds of spaces available to students on the waitlist, if possible.

University Housing is committed to sharing clear and up to date information with you regarding the application and assignment process. Email communication is our primary means of sharing new and unique information that impacts your housing. If you are on the waitlist, you will receive an automated email when you are assigned to a room. You can also call us at 843-349-6400 to talk through your specific questions.

If you've confirmed your alternative off-campus housing and would like to be removed from the waitlist prior to Friday, September 8, please cancel your housing application in MyCoastalHome  and you will be automatically removed from the waitlist. Once you are removed from the waitlist, your $200 prepayment fees will be credited to your student account.

^50% of this portion of your chosen incentive will be disbursed in Fall 2023 & the remaining 50% will be disbursed in Spring 2024.

~Please understand these incentives may be considered taxable income and reported on either form 1098-T or 1099-MISC. Questions concerning the taxability of the incentives should be made to your tax preparer. A valid Social Security Number (SSN) must be on file with the Registrar's Office in order to receive the incentive, and the form to add or change your SSN on file can be found at this link.

Here is a detailed description of each incentive option:

Option 1 – CINO Cash

In addition to the $200 refund of your housing prepayments and access to priority commuter parking, you’ll receive $400 in CINO Cash in the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters. This CINO Cash will be added to your CINO Card for use on campus and at select off-campus retailers at the start of each semester.

Option 2 – First Day® Complete

In addition to the $200 refund of your housing prepayments and access to priority commuter parking, the University will cover up to $400 of your First Day® Complete charges. First Day® Complete costs $24 per credit hour, and you can see how much it might cost you by using the calculator on the website linked above. If your First Day® Complete charges are above $400 in either the fall or spring semesters—because you are taking more than 16 credits—we will cover up to $400 and the remainder will be billed to your student account.

Here is an example: if you have registered for 17 credits in the fall semester, your First Day® Complete charges will be $408 (i.e., 17 credits x $24 = $408). This incentive option would pay the first $400 of those charges, and your final First Day® Complete charges for the fall semester would be just $8!

Here is another example: if you have registered for 16 credits for the fall semester, your First Day® Complete charges will be $384 (i.e., 16 credits x $24 = $384). This incentive option would pay all $384, and you would get $16 in CINO Cash added to your account!

Option 3 – Transportation Fee

In addition to the $200 refund of your housing prepayments and access to priority commuter parking, you are $135 Transportation Fee, which also covers the cost of your parking decal, will be paid in both the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters, and you will receive $265 in CINO Cash in each semester.

Here’s the math for Option 3 – Transportation Fee:

Option 4 – All Dining Dollar Meal Plan

In addition to the $200 refund of your housing prepayments and access to priority commuter parking, the University will provide you with an All Dining Dollars Meal Plan in both the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters. The All Dining Dollars Meal Plan, valued at $450 in dining dollars in each semester, can be used at all on-campus food service locations, and makes the total value of “Option 4 – All Dining Dollar Meal Plan” $1,100.

Yes, it is possible that you may owe taxes on your selected incentive. This is most likely if you choose Option 1- CINO Cash or Option 3- First Day® Complete. Since these incentives may be considered taxable income, they will be reported on either form 1098-T or 1099-MISC, as required. Questions concerning the taxability of the incentives should be made to your tax preparer. A valid Social Security Number (SSN) must be on file with the Registrar's Office in order to receive the incentive, and the form to add or change your SSN on file can be found at this link.

No, if you do not want to accept an incentive, you do not need to take an action. You will maintain your current housing application status or housing assignment. If a change is made to your housing application, you will be notified via your CCU email address.

Requests for Housing Accommodations
