Special Interest Housing

Coastal Carolina University Housing offers several opportunities for students to become invested and engaged in their communities. One option in pursuing further involvement is applying for Special Interest Housing. Involvement in Special Interest Housing has proven to be an effective way for students to become invested in their community, and involvement with a community has been shown to lead to better classroom performance and satisfaction with their experience at Coastal Carolina University.

New Students

The INTEL Community will be a Living Learning Program that focuses on new student engagement with peers, faculty/staff, and extracurricular opportunities within the INTEL Major and the wider university. The objectives of this effort are to enhance the integration of the new INTEL majors into the university community, as well as to develop professional knowledge and skills that will be beneficial in their lives after college. Students will be assigned together in DeCenzo Hall

The SEA Floor is a collaboration between University Housing and the Department of Marine Science. Students who are interested in majoring in marine science are assigned together in Singleton-Young Hall that features social and educational programming focusing on the marine environment. Some examples of past program activities include field trips to Waties Island, invited speakers that give talks on research and/or career advice, movie nights, beach cleanups, kayaking trips, going to the Georgia Aquarium or South Carolina Aquarium, participating in field research, and going on an offshore fishing trip. Activities are resident-driven so there are many possibilities!

The TEACH Community, Teacher Education and Creative Humanities, is for those students who plan to make teaching their life’s work. Students are assigned to a designated section of DeCenzo Hall. The TEACH Community will offer education majors the opportunity to:

  • Exchange insights, suggestions, and aspirations with their fellow education majors regarding teaching, learning, and living in an interdependent community.
  • Obtain accessible support from a program advisor who will help build organizational structures and processes that promote and maintain open communications among the community.
  • Develop leadership skills and professional attributes needed to be a successful teacher candidate in the Spadoni College of Education.
  • Collaborate with faculty to gain valuable knowledge in researching and presenting educational understandings at professional education conferences.

Honors housing provides the opportunity to live in an academic environment that supports the emotional, social and personal growth of our honors students. New students accepted into the HTC Honors College are required to live in the Honors Community in Chanticleer Hall, unless exempt from the Housing and Meal Plan Requirement (STUD-336). Students do not need to apply to live in the community as you are automatically accepted to the community as part of your acceptance to the HTC Honors College during your first year at CCU, as long as you complete your housing application by the published Special Interest Housing room selection deadline. Typically this deadline is in mid-April.

Students who are part of the LIFE Program live with other LIFE students in Ingle Hall or Low Country. Students do not need to apply to live in the community as you are automatically accepted to the community as part of your acceptance to CCU, as long as you complete your housing application by the published Special Interest Housing room selection deadline. Typically this deadline is in mid-April. The LIFE Program will assign students to suites/apartments with a live-in residential support.

New students accepted to the PGA Golf Management (PGM) program are eligible to live with other PGM first-year students in The Woods, unless exempt from the Housing and Meal Plan Requirement (STUD-336). Students do not need to apply to live in the community as you are automatically accepted to the community as part of your acceptance to PGM during your first year at CCU, as long as you complete your housing application by the published Special Interest Housing room selection deadline. Typically this deadline is in mid-April.

Current, Transfer and Graduate Students

International students and American students will be paired as roommates to live in the Intercultural Experience Community (IEC). This community is designed to cultivate friendships, increase intercultural understanding, and encourage mutual sharing of knowledge and experiences. Students are assigned to a designated section of Low Country.

While programming will develop around the interests of the members of this community, potential programs may include:

  • Stammtisch-style discussions (informal gatherings) on current topics of international interest with fellow students and distinguished faculty and staff;
  • Opportunities to learn about study abroad, international internships, and international service learning from student Global Ambassadors returning from international experiences;
  • Identifying and developing exciting on-campus and off-campus activities to enhance cross cultural awareness, including International Education Week;
  • Participation in intercultural programming at local schools and community libraries; and
  • Community dinners and social gatherings.
