Michael Lackey has been named interim director of Kimbel Library at Coastal Carolina University, effective May 1. Lackey, who is head of systems and electronic resources at Kimbel Library, will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Lynne Smith, Coastal's dean of library services.

A native of Shelby, N.C., Lackey joined the Kimbel Library staff in 1991 as head of public services. He earned a bachelor's degree in English and secondary education from Western Carolina University, and a Master of Library Science degree from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Before coming to Coastal he was reference/serials/interlibrary loan librarian at Charleston Southern University.

Lackey has been significantly involved in the development of the PASCAL (Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries) initiative, which will provide an online, unified catalog of all South Carolina academic libraries. PASCAL will allow academic library users throughout the state to access millions of books through an interlibrary loan system. Lackey has held memberships in the American Library Association and the South Carolina Library Association.

At Coastal, Lackey has served as a member of the Faculty Senate and the university technology planning committee, and he has chaired the academic affairs committee and the faculty budget advisory committee.

Kimbel Library houses 146,509 items, including 6,000 multimedia items such as film DVDs and music CDs. The library subscribes to more than 1,300 print journals and some 9,390 online publications. The facility is staffed by 11 professional librarians, nine support staff members and 25 student assistants.
