Visiting assistant professor Molly Gardner will give a talk on the conflicts between human and animal rights at Coastal Carolina University's Philosopher's Corner on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 5 p.m. in the James J. Johnson Auditorium. The public is invited, and the event is free.

Gardner is a visiting lecturer in the philosophy, politics and economics program at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she teaches morality and law and bioethics. She earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a bachelor's degree in music from Grinnell College.

Gardner's main research interests are in ethical theory and metaphysics. She is particularly interested in the metaphysics of harm and the relationships between well-being, impersonal and personal value, causation, moral standing and time. Gardner also has competencies in epistemology, logic, philosophy of mind and philosophy of psychology.

The Philosopher's Corner is sponsored by CCU's Jackson Family Center for Ethics & Values. Each event in this series will feature a contemporary philosopher discussing current topics in philosophy.

The Jackson Center was founded in 2004 by area business and civic leaders Nelson and Mary Emily Platt Jackson. The primary focus of the Jackson Center is to cultivate community awareness on the importance and lifelong rewards of personal and professional integrity.

The Johnson Auditorium is located in the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration, room 116. The Wall College of Business is located at 119 Chanticleer Drive E. in Conway.
