Concerts highlight annual band festival at Coastal

The ninth annual Coastal Honor Band and Scholarship Festival will feature three public concerts in Wheelwright Auditorium on the Coastal Carolina University campus Dec. 2-4.

The festival invites nominated band members from grades 8-12 to campus for a three-day event with faculty from the Department of Music and guest conductors. Students will be placed, by audition, into the Festival Wind Ensemble or the Coastal Honor Band. Interested high school seniors will have the opportunity to audition for scholarships.

Multiple concerts will take place in Wheelwright Auditorium and are as follows:

* The Spectrum2 Concert, Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 8:30 p.m.: The concert will feature student instrumental groups from the Department of Music in a concert of uninterrupted music, with instruments from guitars to drums and styles from classical to jazz. The grand finale will feature the CCU Spirit of the Chanticleer Marching Band performing music from the fall football games.

* The Faculty Recital, Thursday, Dec. 3, at 8:30 p.m.: The recital will feature the region's most talented instrumental recitalists. CCU faculty will perform a varied repertoire from the Renaissance through the 21st century.

* The Coastal Honor Band Concert, Friday, Dec. 4, at 8:30 p.m.: The concert is the finale of the festival. The students will have spent two days immersed in rehearsals and workshops with CCU faculty. The Festival Wind Ensemble will be conducted by internationally renowned movie and television score composer Rossano Galante, and the Coastal Honor Band will be conducted by Nola Jones, coordinator of music for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools. This concert is free and open to the public. Scholarship awards will be announced during the honor band concert for the Fall 2016 incoming freshmen.

The Spectrum2 Concert and the Faculty Recital have a general admission price of $7, with discounts available. Admission is free for members of the Coastal Honor Band.

Senior citizens, OLLI members, alumni, teens, and CCU/HGTC faculty and staff may purchase tickets for $5, and CCU/HGTC students and children are $3.
