Project Green Challenge Kickoff

Project Green Challenge runs October 1 - 30, 2023 and aims to educate, empower, and mobilize high school, college, and graduate students worldwide around climate action, public health, social justice and advocacy. This powerful and diverse call to action features 30 days of environmentally-themed challenges that change lives, shift mindsets, and equip students with knowledge, resources and mentorship to lead change on campuses and in communities. Through conscious living, informed consumption, and individual and collective climate action, PGC participants are challenged to envision and work toward the healthy, just, resilient planet and future in which they can thrive.

Leave No Trace CCU Kickoff

Breakfast Series - Getting to Know Teal Nation

Join Sustain Coastal and the CCU Center for Professional Development for the Breakfast Series - Getting to Know Teal Nation. Faculty and staff are invited to learn more about the University’s zero waste programs, such as Zero Waste football, and other campus-wide sustainability initiatives to learn how we - as employees - can help to achieve CCU’s sustainability goals. Coffee and  breakfast pastry items will be provided. Limited number of spaces available, registration is required.

Pop-Up Thrift Shop

Time: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Location: Prince Lawn

The Pop-Up Thrift Shop brings together the three legs of the sustainability stool – environment, social, and economic. Not only do we save items from the landfill, but we sell them back to the campus community inexpensively and fund sustainability projects at CCU. Items are collected from Campus Salvage at the end of the year and during ongoing monthly donations. Most items are sold for only $2. Only credit card payments are accepted. All money raised from the thrift shop will go to support sustainability projects at CCU. Learn more here

Grand Strand Native Plant Market

Join SCNPS Grand Strand for the first Grand Strand Native Plant Market! The Market will be open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Members of the South Carolina Native Plant Society will have first access to the sale from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Buy native plants from a variety of local vendors including Flying Fig Farm, Native Plants to the People, Roots and Shoots Nursery, Bottle Tree Gardening, Hunter Flytraps, Naturescapes of Beaufort, and Milkweed Madness. Green Sports Day Cleanup

Green Sports Day is an annual event started by the Green Sports Alliance to increase global awareness of sustainability and to promote the positive impact of sports. Lumberyard Community Clean Up Day: Conway Architectural Salvage and Heritage Project

Conway Architectural Salvage and Heritage Project is a nonprofit dedicated to reusing used building materials for the well being of our local communities. Volunteer to help us prepare our lumberyard for our new deconstruction operations! In less than one year, we’ve kept over 200 tons of C&D waste out of our landfills. And this is just the beginning! But we need as much help as we can get to help us achieve our goals!

We will be tilling rows and planting fruit trees as well as other grounds prep. We are a community garden that grows vegetables for the underserved of Conway. We have had several successful days of Coastal student volunteers over the past year, and we look forward to more!

Craft Night - Plarn Coasters

Time: 3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m.
Location: Kimbel Library Makerspace

Join us in the Makerspace for a craft night and repurpose materials into functional art! Plarn, or plastic yarn, is made of grocery bags and left over plastics that are often seen as waste and are difficult to recycle. Learn how to create woven coasters and get creative in this free workshop! This event is a part of our Culture Collage Series in the library this semester. There will be programming throughout the week centered around the theme of "weaving."

A Life on Our Planet Film Screening

Myrtle Beach Green Drinks is a monthly happy hour series hosted by local organizations who are providing solutions to environmental concerns. Enjoy some socialization, education, and networking. October's host is the Coastal Conservation League. Learn how the North Coast team is working to protect the health of the natural resources of the South Carolina coastal plain and ensure a high quality of life for all of the people who live in and love this special place. Zero Waste Football Game vs. Marshall

CCU’s Zero Waste efforts help decrease overall waste from athletic and other events. Waste from all home football games will be either recycled, composted, or donated during the game. With Zero Waste Stations throughout the stadium and in designated tailgate areas, you will be able help support our efforts in making the game a Zero Waste success. Zero Waste Staff and Volunteers will be available at each station to assist and educate about these efforts.

Zero Waste Football Sort

Location: Brooks Stadium, meet inside Gate 2

CCU’s Zero Waste efforts help decrease overall waste from athletic and other events. Waste from all home football games will be either recycled, composted, or donated during the game. Sustain Coastal is looking for student volunteers to help us with our Zero Waste Football Sort.  During the Sort, volunteers work alongside Sustain Coastal staff to sort the materials generated at the game. Paper Recycling Project

Time: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. & 1 - 3 p.m.
Location: Atlantic Hall (642 Century Circle, Conway, SC 29526)

During this volunteering opportunity, students will help Sustain Coastal to recycle a surplus of pamphlets and brochures at Procurement. Students can drive or take the Teal Mobile to the location. Participants must wear sneakers ONLY (no flip-flops, Crocs, or TOMS-like shoes), and should bring water to drink. If you do not have appropriate footwear, you will be sent home. This opportunity is outside, so please wear weather appropriate clothes.
 
Students must register for the volunteering opportunity at least 1 day in advance. To register, you must complete the form below. Please note that if it raining, this event will be cancelled.  Students will receive an email the morning of the activity if it is cancelled. Questions? Horry County Landfill and Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) Tour

Time: 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Location: Atlantic Hall (642 Century Circle, Conway, SC 29526)

Did You Know? The landfill is the highest point of elevation in Horry County and is estimated to reach maximum capacity within the next 30 years. All faculty and staff are invited to join Sustain Coastal and the Horry County Solid Waste Authority for a tour of the local landfill and Materials Recycling Facility (MRF). Learn why sustainability efforts at CCU are so important to our local community and see where CCU's waste materials go!

Transportation will be provided. Trip will leave meeting space, the Clock Tower near Lib Jackson, at 10:05 to ensure arrival at the Horry County Solid Waste Authority by 10:15. Tour locations will be Horry County Solid Waste Authority Landfill and MRF. We will return to campus no later than 12:30 p.m.
